Observations

Brussels officials are considering establishing an EU-wide sanctions authority to promote consistent enforcement of sanctions related to the war in Ukraine. The EU may also expand the powers of its planned Anti-Money Laundering Authority (Amla) to oversee sanctions.

“Anything that would help member states implement [sanctions], and where we see European oversight and co-ordination . . . would be a plus,” Mairead McGuinness, EU Financial Services Commissioner, said in an interview. “The idea of having an overarching view of sanctions and their implementation is one I would support.”
