Research shows that a sense of belonging to a team or organization — one that is aligned with one's own values and identity — in turn leads to higher engagement and well-being. Conversely, a perceived lack of belonging can result in alienation and underperformance. Organizations must cultivate a sense of belonging among staff if they wish to retain employees, which can often be more challenging than attracting new talent.
