Observations

The concept of ‘psychological safety' is receiving increased attention among bank regulators, who highlight its role in driving strong risk cultures. Amy Edmondson, the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School and Advisor to Starling, pioneered the concept while studying the factors that lead good managers to make bad decisions – particularly where those decisions lead to catastrophic consequences.

Joining Adam Grant, a Professor of Management and Psychology at Wharton School of Management, for his WorkLife podcast, Amy recently described her research and how problems with psychological safety have played a role in organizational failures — contributing to the Boeing 737-MAX crisis, for instance.
