Observations

In an American Banker article published late last month, journalist Ebrima Santos Sanneh considers whether regulatory independence in the US is on the decline, and what that means for regulators going forward.

While regulatory agencies have long operated at arm's length from the executive branch, recent actions under President Trump's second term are challenging that tradition. The administration has embraced the "unitary executive" theory, Sanneh explains, asserting direct presidential control over all executive power. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also emphasized the importance of aligning agency actions across the system, reflecting a more centralized approach.
