In a recent speech, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) Chair Wayne Byres, who will be leaving the regulator at the end of October, reflected on his tenure and how the regulator's priorities have changed since he took the helm in 2014.
Byres, who was speaking at the Australian Risk Management Association’s annual CRO Conference, noted that his first speech at the conference, in 2014, left unmentioned several topics that are now a core part of APRA's work: crypto; cyber risks; climate change; and of course the covid pandemic. To Byres' credit, however, the earlier speech did mention the importance of culture and the necessity to address misconduct in the financial sector.
