Observations

In a recent talk at the Oslo Business Forum, Harvard Business School Professor Amy Edmondson, who also serves as an Advisor to us at Starling, explored interpersonal fear at work and how to create a ‘fearless organization’ by building psychological safety.

Fear prevents people from speaking up, discourages them from asking questions, and prevents them from expressing dissent. We care what others, especially ‘higher-ups,’ think of us, Edmondson explained, and no one wants to appear ignorant, incompetent, or hostile.
