Observations

ICYMI: The US Supreme Court has issued its first-ever Code of Conduct, a 15-page document, in response to criticism and pressure over reports of justices accepting undisclosed gifts and favors. The Code, signed by all nine current justices, compiles long-followed informal practices amid concerns that justices do not follow any sort of ethical rules. "To dispel this misunderstanding, we are issuing this Code, which largely represents a codification of principles that we have long regarded as governing our conduct," the Code reads.

According to the Code, justices can seek guidance from colleagues, judicial decisions, other judges, the Supreme Court's in-house legal counsel, and "scholars, scholarly treatises, and articles" regarding their ethical responsibilities. However, it does not create an ethics office or adviser and doesn't provide penalties for violations of ethical standards.
