Observations

ICYMI: Deloitte's DEI Institute and the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at NYU School of Law recently released their "Uncovering Culture" study, examining how U.S. workers "cover" or downplay disfavored identities within mainstream corporate cultures. The study underscores persistent fears of discrimination and unconscious bias in the workplace across various identities like age, religion, race/ethnicity, and mental health status.

Covering is categorized into appearance-based, affiliation-based, advocacy-based, and association-based axes. "Covering in the workplace can be difficult to identify and manage given the subtlety in which pressures to cover can manifest," said Kwasi Mitchell, Chief Purpose & DEI Officer at Deloitte. "The data in this report can serve as a useful blueprint for leaders to understand why covering persists in organizations and how to address its root causes."
