UK FCA and PRA Stress the Importance of Regulatory Independence

Observations

Newly elected Prime Minister, Liz Truss, made waves on the campaign trail when she argued that financial regulators should work to improve the competitiveness of the UK financial market. Some criticized the perceived de-emphasis on the supervisory role of the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), particularly given a history of misconduct across the financial industry.

And Truss went further, arguing that, if elected, she would look to merge the City’s watchdogs, both of which have faced considerable criticism in the last years from the Treasury Select Committee in Parliament, among others.
