London's Metropolitan Police is investigating approximately 1,600 of its staff and police officers for alleged violence and sexual abuse. This shocking revelation exposes a potential long-standing failure to root out predators and serious cultural shortcomings within the ranks of London's police force.
The sweeping internal review aims to purge those guilty of misconduct or criminal acts and restore public trust, which has been eroded by a spate of scandals involving officers assaulting civilians. According to Stuart Cundy, the deputy assistant commissioner leading the standards review, 100 officers have been dismissed for gross misconduct in the past 12 months, and more than 1,000 officers have been suspended while investigations into a variety of allegations are undertaken.
